Internet downloads increase by 33%: ABS

AUSTRALIANS downloaded a record 550,000 terabytes of data from the internet in the December quarter.

Figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on Tuesday showed there was a 33% increase from the June quarter in terms of internet downloads.

The internet activity survey also contained mobile handset internet usage, which increased by 38% to 13,700 TB.

Data downloaded by fixed-line broadband accounted for 95% of total data download volume.

Director of the ABS Innovation and Technology Statistics Branch, Diane Braskic, said the statistics showed continued growth of internet downloads in Australia.

"The growth in data downloads is consistent with factors such as increased subscriber numbers, the continuing move away from dial-up, and the emergence of technologies that enable faster internet," Ms Braskic said.

"Throughout 2012 the number of internet subscribers increased 5% to a total of almost 12.2 million."
