IN the flood of fresh HSV news, it is the return of the GTSR nameplate that's stirring emotions the most.

The name was first seen on the bright "Yellah" HSV VS GTS-R from 1996, and now we have a new trio of GTSR model variants for the 2017 range: a sedan, Maloo ute and motorsport-inspired W1 mad dog.

The GTSR W1 will be the most expensive production Commodore ever at $169,990, the most powerful with 474kW and the quickest to 100kmh at 4.2 seconds.

Key drivers for the GTSR were "a lower, wider, more muscular stance, reinforcing HSV's track heritage". Needless to say, they're not subtle.

Not cheap either.  But really, we many never see their like again, especially with a "Made in Australia" tag being relevant to the majority of the build.

You'll need to shell out $96,990 for the GTSR Maloo, $109,490 the GTSR sedan and $169,990 for the GTSR W1, although the latter is already sold out.

The GTSR and GTSR Maloo come with a 435kW/740Nm 6.2-litre supercharged LSA Gen IV V8 engine, while the W1 scores the hotter LS9 version with its 474kW and 815Nm.

The three GTSR models have an all-new front fascia with an abundance of matte black accents, there are new daytime running lights and front splitter running around the lower edges of the front bumper. The rears feature new diffusers and quad exhaust outlets.

Fenders are 12mm wider each side than your normal HSVs, and feature new horizontal fender vents; carbon fibre in the GTSR W1's case.

Hefty 410mm front brake rotors are clenched by AP Racing six-piston calipers, while tyres are Continental ContiSportContact 5Ps. The W1 scores Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R rubber, a track focused tyre which ain't going to be cheap to replace after an over-exuberant afternoon at the racetrack.

The GTSR W1 gets all-new SupaShock Supercars-esque race-inspired suspension, while the others get the tried and tested (and brilliant) Magnetic Ride Control system.

HSV's managing director Tim Jackson said it was always the plan to send off the final Aussie-built Zeta platform cars with a bang.

"The GTSR name was last used nearly 20 years ago, and as we built this range with a view towards current market expectations and trends, we couldn't help but feel the GTSR nameplate was the logical fit for this family of product," he said.

Build of the GTSR range begins in April: the W1 is already sold out from its limit of around 300 cars, while the two others will be available in limited quantities.

Reckon they could be Australia's greatest ever performance cars? Time to start saving up if you want to know.
