Global 'chill out' cafe brand eyes Coast beachfront

SINGAPORE has one. So do Bali, Colombia, Malta, and the Philippines, and Spain has at least a couple.

The Sunshine Coast could join the list of locations with a Cafe Del Mar by the end of the year.

The Australian licensee for the famous lifestyle and music brand names has been scouting for a Sunshine Coast location for a cafe.

And Michael Vale has his sights set on Coolum Beach.

Mr Vale, who opened Australia's first Cafe Del Mar at Cockle Bay, on Sydney's Darling Harbour, visited the Sunshine Coast last week to view potential locations.

He has confirmed his interest in Coolum and has viewed a site which he described as "perfect".

"It's right where I want to be, in front of the beach," he said.

Mr Vale, who holds the licence for eight of the famous "chill out" cafes in Australia, envisaged at least three in Queensland.

He said he preferred the Sunshine Coast to the Gold Coast as a location for a Cafe Del Mar.

The Cafe Del Mar brand originated from a bar in Ibiza and is famous for its chill-out music and sunset bars.

Mr Vale said the Sunshine Coast culture was the perfect fit for one of the cafes.

"It's classically a Sunshine Coast model, it's very casual, very laidback."

He was confident a Cafe Del Mar would be a drawcard for the area.

"I really think that property in Coolum, a Cafe Del Mar will put it on the world stage," he said.

"It's just a bit of sophistication that's probably not quite there yet.

"I really see it as being a drawcard for the Sunshine Coast. It's really done that in Sydney."

Mr Vale said the Coolum Cafe Del Mar would be different in look and feel to the Sydney cafe.

While Sydney's Cafe Del Mar had an urban theme, Mr Vale envisaged Coolum's would have a more Mediterranean look and feel.

Mr Vale said the cafe could be open by the end of the year.

He said the next step would be to find a local operator to invest in and run the cafe.

"I'd like to think that if all goes to plan, I'd like to open it before the end of the year."
