Home invasion case adjourned

A PSYCHIATRIC report could determine the progress of the case against a Ballina man charged over a violent home invasion in June.

Braden Hardy, 26, faces charges of impersonating a police officer, taking and detaining a person with intent to obtain advantage while inflicting actual bodily harm, two counts of common assault, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and aggravated enter dwelling with intent to deprive a person of their liberty.

The charges relate to the alleged home invasion of a Crane St, Ballina unit on June 25 at about 9pm.

It is alleged when a 65-year-old woman answered Hardy's knock at her door, he claimed to be a police officer investigating a murder.

When the woman came out of her unit as Hardy requested, he allegedly held her hands behind her back and led her to a locked neighbouring unit.

Hardy then allegedly forced entry to the unit and assaulted a 37-year-old man, before telling him and the woman, as well as a 28-year-old man, that they weren't allowed to leave.

When police arrived after being called by a neighbour they were forced to use capsicum spray to subdue Hardy.

Hardy's solicitor, Rachel Thomas asked Magistrate David Heilpern for a six-week adjournment for negotiations with the prosecution.

"During that time I will be obtaining a psychiatric report which may determine the way of the negotiations," Ms Thomas said.

She did not apply for bail and it was formally refused by Mr Heilpern.

Mr Heilpern adjourned Hardy's matters until a date in October at Lismore Local Court.
