Australia’s a hot market for solar batteries

THE advances being made in home battery storage could lead to Australia becoming the world's number one market for solar batteries.

A new report from the Climate Council says the world's two major battery manufacturers have targeted Australia as their first market.

The report found a potential $24 billion market in Australia for the batteries, with half of all homes expected to take up the technology once available.

It found the biggest savings came from being able to store unused energy to use later, especially during peak consumption hours.

Council chief Amanda McKenzie described the new batteries as a possible "game-changer" for power bills.

She said the cost of batteries and rooftop solar could be as "cost-competitive" as using power from the grid by 2018.

The report also found the rapidly falling price of the batteries could lower the cost of electric cars to similar prices as conventional cars in the next 20 years.
