Help needed to protect indigenous history
INDIGENOUS leader Mick Dodson has urged the wider community and governments to back plans to protect important records of indigenous heritage.
The chairman of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies told reporters at the National Press Club the institute was working on a plan to collect, store and share the records.
He asked for help to find documents, photographs and other information about Australia's indigenous history.
Mr Dodson said the institute needed extra support, as it was struggling to visit indigenous communities to collect documents and record oral histories.
He said funding and a group of Australia's best minds should be put to the task to help preserve the culture of Australia's indigenous people.
