Growth in retail as shoppers head to department stores

SHOPPERS have returned to department stores, with the ailing sector up 6.4% in August, pushing retail turnover up 0.4% during the month.

The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics retail trade data showed department stores were the chief driver of growth in retail during August.

It was head and shoulder above other retail sectors, with restaurants, cafes and takeaway outlets reporting the second-biggest growth of 0.4% in August.

But the rises were partially offset by falls in household goods trading, down 0.6% and "other retailing", down 0.2%.

Consumers in Victoria led the push, contributing 0.6% of growth, followed by New South Wales and 0.4%, Western Australia up 0.7% and Queensland up 0.2%.

Over the year, retail turnover rose 2.3% in August, compared to August last year, seasonally adjusted.
