Griffin set to be new coach of Penrith Panthers

FORMER Brisbane Broncos coach Anthony Griffin is reportedly set to be the new coach of Penrith Panthers.

A Newscorp publication in Sydney reported that club executive general manager Phil Gould had been having discussions with Griffin for several weeks and was expected to make an announcement on Wednesday.

Griffin was sacked by the Broncos in 2015 before being replaced himself by Wayne Bennett.

Following a poor season which saw the Panthers finish 11th on the NRL ladder, the club terminated the final year of Cleary's contract, effective immediately.

Cleary spent four seasons at the Panthers and the last campaign was one of the toughest following a spate of injuries throughout the season to key players.

"Ivan Cleary has done a tremendous job in his four years at the Panthers," club executive general manager Phil Gould said in a Panthers statement.

"He has laid the foundation for the future and we are enormously grateful for his contribution to the club.

"We wish Ivan, his wife Rebecca and his family all the very best for the future."

Penrith had already parted ways with assistant coach Trent Barrett who has left to take the coaching job at Manly next season.
