Griffen set to follow Patfull to Giants

WESTERN Bulldogs skipper Ryan Griffen still appears set for a move to GWS despite coach Brendan McCartney yesterday falling on his sword.

Bulldogs president Peter Gordon said at the press conference to announce McCartney's resignation that he expected Griffen to honour the final year of his contract next season, albeit not as captain.

But any position at the club looks untenable, with the Giants having until 2pm next Thursday to broker a deal to gain the services of the 28-year-old midfielder.

McCartney did not front the media yesterday, but said in a prepared statement: "It's a sad man that resigns today, but that's footy. I leave knowing that I got some things right and got some wrong, but I did my best and gave everything."

The uncertainty at the Bulldogs appears to have put off Geelong defender Tom Lonergan, who rejected a big offer from the club and re-signed with the Cats.

Two-time Brisbane Lions best and fairest Joel Patfull has completed his move to Greater Western Sydney.

And it is expected the pick that the Lions received from the Giants (21) will be forwarded to Geelong for midfielder Allen Christensen, who has requested a move.

Patfull, 29, still had a year to run on his contract at Brisbane but wanted a lifestyle change in Sydney.

"For me to add a bit of experience and leadership to the GWS backline is something I'm looking to do and it's really exciting for the next couple of years," Patfull told AFL Trade Radio. "I think I've made the right decision."
