Sailing news: Great white sightings are rare

LARGE sharks have been in the news lately due to a couple of tragic events in northern New South Wales.

While great white sharks are known to frequent Sunshine Coast waters, divers rarely come across them underwater.

I've dived off the Sunshine Coast for almost 40 years and I've never seen a great white shark.

Local divers wishing to see them underwater choose to travel to South Australia where they can join a regular shark diving tours.

What we do know is that humans are not the natural food for sharks. If they were then we would never enter the water.

As far as I'm aware there has been no recorded shark attack on a scuba diver in Queensland.

This should give comfort to the thousands of scuba divers who take to the water each year to explore the undersea world.
