Govt funds for research aimed at transforming food industry

MORE than $23 million will be spent on research projects to help improve food processing and train more scientists at universities around the country.

The research projects form part of the government's much-touted $1 billion jobs plan and will focus on high-level scientific research on advanced technologies and "food industry transformation".

Four new research hubs will be created to help the food manufacturing industry tackle the rising economic problems it faces.

The first round of spending will be directed at the dairy and wine industries, aquaculture and increasing Asian export opportunities.

However, the beef, grain and horticulture industries were not among those granted research grants, with most focused on ensuring the future of processing centres in the major cities and regional centre.
