APN's weekly NRL wrap-up

GOLDEN TRY: Brisbane halfback Ben Hunt revived debate about replacing golden point with golden try after he won the game in extra time with a four-pointer. Some people dislike the idea of a great 80-minute contest like the Broncos-Roosters clash being decided by a field goal rather than a try. If there is no try in extra-time, each side takes a point.

FEEL-GOOD MOMENT: After losses in his 50th, 100th and 150th games, "The Beast", Manu Vatuvei (pictured), was able to celebrate his 200th with a win. The Warriors' gentle giant marked the occasion with two typical tries. There would not be a true league fan, who has not enjoyed the entertainment big Manu has provided over the years, who did not feel good for him.

SEND-OFF MOMENT: It's been 34 rounds since a player was sent off in an NRL game. There were plenty who thought Dragons forward Tyson Frizell should have got his marching orders for his high shot on Bulldogs forward Tim Browne, who was falling in a tackle. Browne was knocked out by Frizell's swinging arm but, in the opinion of the on-field referees, was not sent from the field as his fist was not clenched and Browne was falling at the time. Frizzell will do time. For the record, the last player sent off was Kade Snowden in round 24, 2013.

BEST COMEBACK: A John-athan Thurston-inspired North Queensland came from 12-4 down at half-time to score 26 unanswered points against defending premier South Sydney. The Cowboys looked in trouble at the break but Thurston added to his two man-of-the-match performances as he sparked a stunning second half. JT is in rare form and that means the Cowboys will be tough to beat, no matter who they play.

HOW GOOD WAS THAT? The 80-minute battle between a fired-up Sam Thaiday (Brisbane) and Jared Waerea-Hargreaves (Roosters) in front of 35,000 fans last Friday night was one of the highlights of the season. Two tough bulls going at each other, neither giving an inch, in each other's faces, snarling and glaring, seeking each other out at every opportunity, inspiring their teammates. Please let's see more of this fire from our big men - it had everyone talking.
