Police warn of scammers’ latest 'excess GST' phone scam

IF IT seems too good to be true, it probably is.

That is the message from police amid reports of a new telephone scam targeting the elderly.

Caloundra CIB has received two complaints in the past week from residents who picked up the phone flashing a number starting with "02".

The person on the other end, with a foreign accent, tells them they are entitled to a GST refund.

All they have to do is call another phone number, hand over their bank details and the money is all theirs.

Simple right?

Unfortunately police say some people are falling for the seemingly obvious scam.

Detective Senior Constable Kate Maynard urged residents to report any suspicious phone calls.

"We have called the number and told them we were the police and we are investigating and they became quite abusive and hung up," Det Snr Const Maynard said.

"Fair Trading is aware of these calls and we'd urge people to take down the number, hang up and report the suspicious call to the police.

"The scammers seem to be targeting elderly residents who may be confused by the offer or those who are having financial difficulties and see this like a lotto win.

"Government departments will not call you for personal details."

The Queensland Police Service also issued a warning about scammers trying to rip off those affected by last week's deluge.

Police are aware of an incident in which a Deception Bay woman received a call this week from a man claiming to be from the Department of Communities.
