AFL: Greater Western Sydney big man Shane Mumford has suffered a pre-season injury set-back.
The star ruckman will be sidelined for four weeks after undergoing surgery to correct an elbow injury, just 19 days before the Giants opening JLT Community Series game.
The Giants confirmed Mumford's operation, saying it was to remove some floating bone in his right elbow.
Club head of athletic performance David Joyce said he expected it would have no impact on Mumford's season.
"The surgery was a success and we don't expect Shane to have any ongoing issues," he told the club website.
"Shane has had a really good pre-season to date and has hardly missed a beat, so we're confident this shouldn't affect his preparation for the premiership season.
"We'll monitor Shane closely and expect him to take his place in the later parts of the JLT Community Series."
In his third season with the club, Mumford played 23 games, helping the Giants make a maiden preliminary final.
GWS faces West Coast in Narrandera on February 18 and it hopes Mumford could return for either the clash against Sydney at Blacktown on March 3 or against North Melbourne in Canberra on March 10.
