Gelagotis keen to run out with Hvasstan

GIPPSLAND-based trainer Peter Gelagotis has no qualms taking on the likes of proven top line performers Super Cool, Fiveandahalfstar and Its A Dundeel in Saturday's Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) with his promising stayer Hvasstan.

Gelagotis said he was thrilled with the progress Hvasstan had made since winning the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) at Moonee Valley on March 15.

"He's ready to rock and roll. He didn't have a hard run in the Alister Clark and he's ticking all the boxes perfectly," Gelagotis said.

"He'll head to Sydney later in the week and all going well on Saturday he'll stay up there for the Australian Derby."

The trainer said the Fastnet Rock colt had improved on his fourth behind Fiveandahalfstar in last year's VRC Derby (2500m), adding he had no qualms about taking on the silk brigade.

"I reckon our horse is equal to Super Cool and Fiveandahalfstar, not a doubt in my mind and they're the benchmark so far," Gelagotis said.

"I'm not scared of taking on anyone. Those horses have got to stay and we can stay, there's still that question mark on some of his opposition."

Gelagotis said he also planned to take lightly-raced five-year-old Mourinho to Sydney provided he performed as expected in Saturday's Group 3 Easter Cup (2000m) at Caulfield.

The Oratorio gelding was scratched from last Saturday's Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill, but the trainer said the galloper appeared to have fully recovered.

"He just had a little tying up episode for some unknown reason, it was very odd," Gelagotis said.

"He stiffened up after some work during the week and we just couldn't take the risk travelling under those circumstances.

"Yesterday morning you wouldn't have known the horse had a problem - he was bouncing out of his skin again.

"He'll go to the Easter Cup at Caulfield on Saturday - the owners are really keen to chance their arm at a Group 1 and they want to have a go at The BMW."

Mourinho has won four of his 10 starts and turned in a promising third behind Gold Sand in the C S Hayes Stakes (1600m) at Morphettville on March 11 at his last outing.
