SHE hadn't even been targeting the race but Australian Katrin Garfoot has raced to a silver medal at the world road cycling championships in Bergen, Norway.

The medal makes Garfoot Australia's most successful rider at the event after she claimed a bronze in her pet event, the individual time trial, last week.

The Australian was one of seven women who rode the race after riders won an appeal to have Australia field a full compliment after just five women were selected originally.

Garfoot's silver in the 153km endurance test matches the best result by an Australian woman in the world road race with Liz Tadich second in 1997, Anna Woods in 1999 and Rachael Neylan in 2012.

"It was a good feeling to sprint for silver, I actually surprised myself I guess,” said 35-year-old Garfoot.

"The road race is always a bit of a lottery so I was glad I could mix it. It was always going to be tough against three Dutchies; in a race of seven, the odds were stacked against me.

"I am over the moon with my silver medal.”

Dutch rider Chantal Blaak finished 28 seconds ahead of Garfoot who outsprinted Danish rider Amalie Dideriksen for third.
