Fun run and walk for women's refuge

THE Ballina Lions Club fun run gives plenty of people the opportunity to run for fun, and this year's event will be helping those in the community who are running for their lives.

The 11th annual fun run-walk will be held on Sunday, August 14, and support the Hope Haven Women's and Children's Refuge in Ballina, along with Wollongbar-based Heartfelt House which provides support to adult victims of childhood sexual abuse.

Co-ordinator of Hope Haven, Karen, whose surname has been withheld, said the facility has accommodated more than 4000 women and children since it opened in 1999.

She agreed that, for many women living in a violent situation, running away was one of the hardest things to do.

But Hope Haven is there to support those who manage to garner the courage to escape.

Karen said Hope Haven might be the finish line for the escape from violence, but it was more like a starting line as those women and children "rebuild their lives".

Entry forms at ballinalions.com or Athletes Foot in Ballina Central.
