Major rail freight terminal back on cards for Casino

DESPITE a hold-up of four years since it was approved, the Casino Freight Terminal project looks to be back on track.

Project managing director Phillip Imrie had been in partnership with Casino-based real estate agent John McMahon until Mr McMahon's business ceased operation in 2012.

"We got approval for the terminal in 2010 and the company owned all the designs," Mr Imrie said.

Now with rice farmer Rex Boag on board as a co-director, the company could is in a position to start building its modern freight terminal, Mr Imrie said.

The freight terminal was planned as an intermodal freight and grain accumulation facility which would be located on Reynolds Rd, North Casino, and would handle maximum corridor length trains. The aim was for it to become a key storage facility, Mr Imrie said.

"We will also be lodging a DA for a highly productive grain terminal with a storage facility covering 1.6 ha," Mr Imrie said.

"We will also have a facility for drying crops such as soy and rice," he said.

The timber industry would also benefit, Mr Imrie said.

"The site is ideal for forest product processing," he said.

Mr Imrie said benefits for the Northern Rivers including cheaper freight movement; a possible increase in crop growing in the area due to the ease of drying, handling and shipping; and less freight on the roads and more on rail.

"The land, known as Summerdowns, where the terminal will be located, covers 122 ha, half of which will be developed and the rest left as a buffer zone," he said.
