FOUR shops in Maclean CBD were gutted by fire late Saturday night. Crews from Maclean Yamba and Gulmarrad Rural Fire Service attended the blaze after being alerted by a 000 caller at 11.36pm.
The Cameron Arcade shops affected by smoke and heat damage were Clarence Valley Home Aid Equipment, Maclean Picture Framing at the front of the arcade and trophy and uniform shops at the rear.
Duty Commander Northern Rivers Inspector Gary White said the prompt response from crews prevented further spreading and damage to neighbouring buildings including Carney's Arcade and the Maclean Fire Station.
The irony of that latter building was not lost on Inspector White.
"It's pretty unusual for the guys to arrive at the station and open the door to see the engine room filling up with smoke."
"They basically had to get dressed in there and get the truck out to drive it a few metres away."
The fire is still under investigation by the state fire brigade and the police.
