Former sportsman guilty of assault with intent to rape

A FORMER Rockhampton sportsman has been acquitted of raping a woman in the front seat of his car.

But the man, who cannot be identified to protect the identity of his alleged victim, was found guilty of assault with intent to rape and depriving the woman of her liberty.

The woman alleged the man raped her during the early hours of June 11 last year while his car was parked in a suburban Brisbane street.

They had met earlier in the evening through mutual friends and the man offered the woman a lift home from a party after her lift failed to show up.

On the way, the woman agreed to have a drink with the man at a hotel located near her house.

The night turned ugly when the two left the hotel.

The jury took about two hours to reach a verdict.

Judge Hugh Botting adjourned the man's sentence to another day.
