Taxpayer foots bill as Shorten settles unfair dismissal claim

A FORMER Labor staffer has won an employment dispute with her then-boss, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, after claiming she was unfairly dismissed.

The staffer, who worked in Mr Shorten's parliamentary office, was reportedly sacked earlier this year, but claimed the dismissal was unfair.

The ABC reported she received an undisclosed payout last week over the dismissal. That settlement remains confidential but could be worth up to 20 weeks' pay.

It is understood the settlement has been reached with the Department of Finance, which oversees salaries for MPs staff.

None of the parties involved would comment on the specifics of the case because of the confidentiality terms in the settlement.
