Saturday Footy 'mega'

FOOTY fans can see more live rugby league from more angles than ever before on Fox Sports.

The broadcaster's coverage of the 2014 NRL Premiership will feature up to 11hours of live coverage every Saturday hosted by Matt Shirvington.

"It's just evolved from super Saturday to now mega Saturday," Shirvington told The Guide.

"Last year we had a few triple headers but not all of them. This year we're going for gold. We've got the Holden Cup, then straight into the NSW Cup and then the NRL triple header. It's 11 hours of live rugby league on Fox Sport 1."

The new Saturday line-up reflects the NRL's move to increase the number of day games, moving Sunday evening games to Saturday afternoons.

Shirvington says he's ready to spend the next six months talking footy.

"I just did two eight-hour back-to-back days covering the Auckland Nines, so I think that's a pretty good taster," he said.

"I really enjoy, as a spectator, watching footy. It's a bit of a dream job I must say. Once again I've got great guys to work with, so if I can facilitate the conversation, if I can ask the right questions - the questions the punters want to know - then that' my job half done. I just like being able to get the most out of the guys on the panel and getting to the game on time."

Joining Fox Sports' NRL commentary team this year is former Broncos, Titans and Cowboys player Scott Prince.

"I'm on the safer side of the fence," laughed Prince.

"It's like anything new, there's a lot of excitement around that and a few nerves as well.

"It's a whole new adventure and the beauty is that it involves something I'm really passionate about, rugby league."

Prince said his 15 years in the game didn't make him any less of a new kid around the Fox Sports studios.

"It's all new for me. I'll have to start from the bottom and work my way to the top in all elements. There's a lot of hard work ahead of me," he said.

"The weird thing, I guess, is I'm going from one year of lacing up boots and the smell of dencorub in the change room to the smell of make-up and wearing a suit every weekend."

But Shirvington's not worried about the new recruit.

"He'll fit straight in," he said.

After the introductions of Fox copter and corner post cam, Fox Sports will debut its new ref cam in the middle of the season.

"We're trying to give the viewers the experience of being there," Shirvington said.

"It was tested last year and it's been revamped to be a bit more ergonomical for the refs to wear.

"If they're feeding a scrum or whatever you get up close and personal to the action."

And with panel shows including Monday Night with Matty Johns (pictured), NRL 360 and Back Page Live, something NRL-related will be on Fox Sports six nights a week.
