Salim Mehajer handcuffed and arrested in Ibiza

THE former deputy mayor of Auburn Council, Salim Mehajer, appears to have found himself in yet more hot water with footage emerging of him being arrested in Ibiza.

The footage shows the 30-year-old ex-politician being handcuffed with A Current Affair saying Mehajer was involved in a dispute with a taxi driver.

The tabloid news television program states the cabbie claims Mehajer and a friend got into the cab and ate their takeaway and when he told them to stop it's alleged Mehajer tried to kick him from the back seat.

Reportedly they were then told to wait on the side of the road before police arrived on the scene, cuffed Mehajer and his friend and drove them away.

Footage of the incident shows the pair were laughing after they were pushed into the police car,

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade says it is trying to confirm the reports.

"DFAT stands ready to provide consular assistance to Australians in difficulty overseas who request it, in accordance with the Consular Services Charter," a spokeswoman said.

The one-time local politician and multi-millionaire property developer has fallen on tough times in recent months after he separated from his wife Aysha.

In September he took to Instagram to say he was leaving the country and posted a photo of a yacht with Sydney Harbour Bridge in the background and the caption: "Goodbye Australia,"

Mehajer told Instagram followers at the time he was off to take on other challenges.

Yesterday he posted photos of boats on the water on the Spanish party island of Ibiza.

That image followed several others from what looks like a jaunt around Europe.

Four days ago he took to the same social media platform to say if US President Donald Trump could make a comeback so could he.

"What's meant to be will always find its way," he wrote.

"Even with all that negative media stigma they still couldn't stop Trump... I get the feeling, seeing the winner be the one that everyone doubted."

In the photo that accompanied the post the 30-year-old was sitting on a plane toasting with a glass of orange juice.

Mehajer's Instagram account indicates he left the country about one month ago when he posted a photo from what appeared to be first class seats on Emirates Airlines.
