'Flying' car retrieved after crashing into reservoir walkway

A FLYING car stopped traffic along North Creek Rd at Lennox Head for a short time this afternoon (June 3).

The green Honda Civic was being hoisted by the strong arm of Universal Cranes from its final resting place in the access walkway surrounding the Lennox Head water reservoir.

The car on May 23 crashed through two fences and grazed the concrete wall of the reservoir before dropping down about 2.5m onto the access pathway and landing on its roof.

The incident occurred after the driver lost control of the vehicle while rounding a sharp bend, travelling north-bound on the Lennox road.

It is understood the driver walked, with cuts, bruising and in shock, to the Lennox Hotel more than 1km away, and the staff phoned the authorities.

A neighbouring property owner, Margaret Condon, said the driver was extremely lucky to escape without serious injuries.

It is also lucky the driver remained conscious as the vehicle could not be seen from the public footpath next to the reservoir.

The access pathway around the reservoir is about a car-width wide.

Ballina Shire Council, which has responsibility for the water reservoir, did not have to foot the bill for the salvage of the vehicle.

A week before this latest incident, another vehicle hit a telegraph pole on the same corner.
