Flemington run puts Spirit of Boom against Black Caviar

A SPARKLING trackwork gallop at Flemington on Saturday morning has convinced Queensland trainer Tony Gollan to nominate his star sprinter Spirit Of Boom against super mare Black Caviar in Friday night's $400,000 Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.

Spirit Of Boom ran on strongly for third in the Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield on February 23, before finishing a well-beaten sixth behind Shamexpress in the Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on March 9.

Gollan has taken the advice of jockey Brett Prebble, who rode the five-year-old in both of those starts, adding a crossover noseband in an effort to get Spirit Of Boom to settle better in his races.

Gollan said while the track gallop with the new gear had been brilliant, he wasn't getting carried away with the chances of inflicting Black Caviar's first defeat

."If you're a rival trainer with a rival horse, you'd prefer her not to be there, but she's great for racing and if we can run second to her that would be fantastic," he said.

Spirit of Boom needs just $18,300 in prizemoney to top the $1 million milestone, and looks a great chance to fill a placing in what will in all likelihood be a small field.

Luckygray and Good Ba Ba are confirmed starters, while Emirates Stakes runner-up Fawkner and quality middle-distance performer Linton are expected to resume in the event.
