TOM Cruise and Russell Crowe star in what looks like a very serious reboot of The Mummy.

Universal Pictures has released a 15-second teaser trailer ahead of Monday's debut of the film's first official trailer.

This new addition to the action franchise, which originally starred Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, features a new cast and is set in modern-day London with flashbacks to ancient Egypt.

Star Trek Beyond's Sofia Boutella plays an ancient princess who is awakened from her crypt beneath the desert, bringing with her 'malevolence grown over millennia and terrors that defy human comprehension'.

Curiously, Crowe's character is named Dr Henry Jekyll.

Cruise and Crowe are supported by Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World) and Courtney B Vance (American Crime Story: The People V OJ Simpson).

It has been eight years since the last The Mummy installment, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, was released.

The Mummy opens in cinemas in June 2017.
