UPDATE 4:45pm THE owner of a Casino home that was destroyed by fire this afternoon was out when the blaze took hold.

The owner, who did not want to be named, said she left home at 2.30pm yesterday to pick her children up from school and received a phone call just after 3pm to tell her that her Dyraaba St home was alight.

She said she lost some of her children's Christmas presents and years of memories in the blaze.   The owner said the home was insured and it was fortunate her dog and cat were able to be saved.

INITIAL REPORT 3:45pm EMERGENCY services are currently on the scene of a house fire at Casino.

A Newcastle Fire Communications spokesman said Fire and Rescue NSW Casino brigade were called to an address on Dyraaba St at Casino about 3:10pm after reports a house was on fire.

When fire fighters arrived they saw flames coming through the roof of the timber and tile home, the spokesperson said.

Fire fighters quickly got to work to try and extinguish the blaze, the spokesman said, and while they were fighting the fire, the roof and ceiling of the home collapsed.

Police and NSW Ambulance paramedics are at the scene and all occupants of the home were uninjured and have been accounted for.

Fire fighters are still extinguishing the blaze.

Essential Energy has been notified to shut off electricity to the home.   More details to come.
