Firebirds show steel ahead of finals series

THE Queensland Firebirds have warmed-up for Sunday's Australian conference final by accounting for the Southern Steel 66-50 in Brisbane in the final home-and-away game of the 2015 trans-Tasman championship season.

The Steel defenders had no answer to the height and speed of Firebirds goalshooters Romelda Aiken (pictured) and Gretel Tippett.

Under the new finals system introduced this season, the NSW Swifts (second) will host the West Coast Fever (third) on Friday night, with the winner travelling to Brisbane to take on the Firebirds on Sunday.

The Steel finished third on the New Zealand conference ladder on percentage from the Central Pulse despite the loss, and will face WBOP Magic (second) in Hamilton on Saturday night.

The winner of that game will have the chance to tackle the New Zealand conference winners, the Northern Mystics, in Auckland next Monday night.
