Firebirds eye top after win over Vixens

A 17-goal third quarter has helped the Queensland Firebirds to a second win of the season over the Melbourne Vixens.

The 54-45 success over the reigning title-holder puts the Firebirds second on the Australian Conference in the ANZ Championship behind the West Coast Fever, which has the same number of points but leading with a better goal difference.

With three rounds to play, a first-place finish will earn the Firebirds a week-one final on home soil.

It was the team's seventh straight win and came after it led at all changes.

For the Firebirds, Gretel Tippett scored 16 goals from 25 attempts, while star shooter Romelda Aiken (pictured) overcame a slow start to down 38 from 44.

Also yesterday, the NSW Swifts defeated the bottom-placed Adelaide Thunderbirds 65-54. Caitlin Thwaites scored 38 goals from 42 attempts, with Susan Pettitt hitting 27 from 30.
