Blaze engulfs and destroys home

BREAKING: Fire has destroyed a home near Coffs Harbour with firefighters battling the blaze for more than four hours.

Rural Fire Service Coffs Harbour crews and trucks raced to Friday Creek Rd at Upper Orara at 7.30pm.

It took four hours to contain the blaze with the 14-strong crew of firefighters battling the flames in difficult terrain and weather.

RFS Coffs Harbour's Inspector Michael Brougham said the terrain hindered the crew's efforts to access the site with firefighters having to use portable pumps to get water from a nearby swimming pool.

Police on scene were co-ordinating with the RFS to assist the crews to access the fire. Insp Brougham said it was a great effort between agencies on the scene.

Insp Brougham said according to neighbours, the owner of the home was away at the time of the fire. The remoteness meant no surrounding properties were at risk.

Police this morning said they finished examinations of the scene for their ongoing investigation into the fire.
