Fighters gather for boxing reunion

A BUNCH of boxers will get together at the Cherry Street Sports Club on Saturday afternoon, but the gloves will be off and they will be shaking hands rather than imparting blows.

But that's not to say there won't be any jabs - though they're likely to be the light-hearted verbal kind as the old fighters reminisce on their days in the ring.

Ballina's Paul Gibson is behind the reunion of all those involved in boxing - including referees and judges from any association and any form of boxing, including kick-boxing.

He started boxing when he was eight, and hung up the gloves when he was 32.

He also turned to kick-boxing and was the super feather-weight Australian champion from 1986-1989.

The idea for the reunion came after Paul was chatting to some other local boxers, Bevan Connor, who last year stepped back into the ring for the Australian Masters Games, and Justin Rowsell, a former World Boxing Organisation Intercontinental lightweight boxing champion and 1992 Olympian.

Gibson said there had been talk about getting a reunion happening, and he thought "bugger it, I'm going to do it".

He said he expects about 150 to attend the reunion, and they're coming from as far away as Townsville, Melbourne and Perth.

And Gibson jokingly admitted some of the stories the old boxers are likely to share will be "stretched".

He said Kyogle Olympian Athol McQueen along with Rowsell and former Australian light-heavyweight champion Geoff Peate will be there.

Mixed-martial arts master, Peter Roberts, also is coming along.

The reunion will be held at the Cherry Street Sports Club on January 30 from 12.30pm.

It's just a matter of turning up. There is no charge; just buy your own drinks and food.

The boxers will be able to let their competitive spirit loose with a game of barefoot bowls.
