Ferguson hopes RvP will step up and score against City

MANCHESTER United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is confident his star striker Robin van Persie will soon start scoring again - at Old Trafford tonight would be ideal.

The Dutch international is the Red Devils top-scorer with 23 goals in all competitions this season, but he has not netted in his last nine games, so breaking the drought in the derby against defending champion and arch rival, Manchester City, would be perfect.

A win would send United 18 points clear of City and well on the way to a record 20th Premier League title.

City will be out to avenge its 3-2 defeat at the Etihad earlier this season, while United will be keen to bury the memories of the 6-1 thumping at the hands of its neighbour in this fixture last year.

At the other end of the table, last-placed Reading looks doomed after losing 2-0 at home against Southampton, while Aston Villa climbed out of the relegation zone after a 3-1 win at Stoke.
