Hearing for Gaagal Wanggaan native title claim

THE Federal Court is set to convene in Nambucca Heads on Friday to settle one of NSW's longest running native title claims.

Justice Jayne Jagot of the Federal Court of Australia will consider formally recognising Gumbaynggirr People's native title rights over an area encompassing coastal land just south of Nambucca Heads, which today forms part of the Gaagal Wanggaan (South Beach) National Park.

The claim area has a combined area of 6.2352 square km.

Parties to the Gumma-Warrell Creek native title claim will ask the Federal Court to recognise "by consent" Gumbaynggirr People's native title rights to hunt, fish, camp, gather natural resources and protect cultural sites, in accordance with their traditional laws and customs.

Gumbaynggirr People are hopeful the Court's decision will see the end of a nearly 20 year struggle to protect a highly significant piece of coastal land.

NTSCORP Ltd is the native title service provider assisting the Gumbaynggirr People.

NTSCORP CEO Ms Natalie Rotumah said if the determination recognising Gumbaynggirr People's native title is made it will be a great win.

"Gumbaynggirr People's vision was to use all available avenues under the law to achieve Aboriginal control and protection of a highly significant piece of land, and NTSCORP has been proud to support them on their journey," Ms Rotumah said.
