Fatal crash blocks highway north of Ballina

Motorists are advised to avoid travelling on the Pacific Highway north of Ballina after a fatal truck crash at Tintenbar this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the northbound lanes of the Pacific Highway, just south of the Ross Lane interchange, at about 3.25pm after reports of the crash.

When paramedics arrived at the scene they confirmed the driver of the truck was deceased.

Police have called for the fire brigade to attend the scene to clean up more than 300 litres of diesel that has spilled on the highway from the large truck which was towing an excavator.

Reports from the scene claimed that the tyres on the trailer of the truck had blown.

Motorists travelling north are advised to take the Ballina exit from the highway, and travel through the township via River Street, Kerr Street and Tamarind Drive and then rejoin the Pacific Highway.

Drivers are advised to allow additional travel time, exercise caution and follow signs in the area.

All southbound lanes of the highway remain open at this stage.

Due to the nature of the accident, the road is expected to be closed for some time.
