Family’s grave fears for missing kayaker

POLICE have released the name of the 76-year-old Nimbin man who went missing after kayaking on Clarrie Hall Dam near Uki on Thursday.

John Barrett was reported missing by a family member last Friday when he failed to return from one of his regular kayaking trips to the dam.

The family member told officers Mr Barrett often camped near the dam and fished from his kayak, but he would always let family or friends know if he was staying overnight.

Yesterday the search for Mr Barrett entered the fourth day after land, air and boat searches conducted on the weekend by police, SES and the Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter located his kayak, paddle and a bag on Saturday.

Police divers concentrated their search efforts around a net in the dam, close to where Mr Barrett's kayak, paddle and bag were found.

Tweed Byron Local Area Command duty officer Inspector Darren Steel said the second day of searching by divers yesterday failed to find any trace of Mr Barrett and the search would resume today.

Mr Barrett's white Holden panel van and kayak remained at the scene yesterday. His family hold grave concerns for his safety.

Anyone with any information on Mr Barrett or his whereabouts is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
