MACKAY relatives of Queensland's representatives in the latest series of The Block were excited to watch the series premiere last night.

Mark "Johnno" Johnson and Katrina "Trixie" Johnson were successful in auditioning for this year's season, which began filming in January.

Trixie's aunt Ruth O'Mera, of Mackay, said she wasn't surprised to hear her niece had been selected for the show.

"The pair of them have always been very energetic people," she said.

"Trixie's always been a very imaginative and creative person."

She said the whole family rallied around the television last night to watch the couple's debut performance.

"I hope they really do well out of it," she said.

With Trixie's mother born and raised in Mackay, Trixie said she spent much of her childhood travelling back and forth from Brisbane to visit her grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

With several relatives still in town, Trixie said she hoped there would be a lot of support for them from the region.

"My grandfather lives in Shoal Point," she said.

Despite filming forcing the couple from being with their three children, Trixie said the experience had so far been a lot of fun.

"Everyone uses the term 'rollercoaster ride' but I don't know how else to explain it," she said.

She said the hardest thing was being away from her kids.

"We've only seen them four times since we've been here. You never have time off because you're constantly working."

Trixie said they chose to go on the show because they both loved renovating.

"I wanted a chance at winning some money to bring security back to our kids," she said.

"I expected it to be physically exhausting but I was surprised by how mentally exhausting it is."

Johnno also has a connection with Mackay, having lived here for seven years as a child, because of his father's work.
