BYRON Bay gets its third major music festival this New Year's Eve with the announcement the Falls Music & Arts Festival will run a four-day event at Splendour in the Grass's Yelgun site.

Falls is one of the major tickets on the Australian festivals circuit and today's announcement means three of Australia's biggest music festivals - along with Bluesfest and Splendour - are now held within the Byron Shire.

The Falls Festival has run for 20 years at Lorne in Victoria and 10 years ago branched out to include Marion Bay at Tasmania.

"We're really excited to be heading north and expanding this year," Falls Festival founder Simon Daly was quoted saying in a statement released by the festival.

"The Byron Bay location couldn't be better suited to everything that has always encompassed Falls in Lorne and Marion Bay. Coastal and charming natural settings; a destination for our patrons to travel for."

The Byron event will run from New Year's Eve through to January 3, overlapping with the Lorne and Marion Bay events, which will run from December 28 to January 1, and from December 29 to January 1, respectively.

The festival is yet to announce the line-ups for its three events.
