'Explosive growth' in data being downloaded on phones

HEY! Stop all that downloading.

As Australians become increasingly glued to their phones, the amount of data being downloaded to their handsets keeps climbing.

New figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics suggest that in April, May and June this year, nearly 20,000 terabytes of data was downloaded.

This was an increase of 6000 terabytes.

To put the jargon into perspective - one terabyte is the equivalent of 350,000 music files or MP3s.

ABS spokeswoman Lesley Martin said there was "explosive growth" in the volumes being downloaded.

The total amount downloaded by mobile phones marked a 43% increase compared to the final three months of 2012.

While the figures appear head-spinning, they are nothing compared to the amount Aussies are downloading to their computers.

From April to June, Australian's 12.35 million internet users dowloaded 657,000 terabytes, up 18% compared to the end of 2012.

Do you spend more on your mobile phone than expected each month? By how much?

This poll ended on 31 March 2014.
