‘Evil stepmum’ sentenced to death

A 36-year-old stepmother has been sentenced to die by lethal injection for starving her 10-year-old stepdaughter to death and then burning her body with the child's father.

Tiffany Moss showed no emotion as the jury delivered the sentence for the death of her stepdaughter, Emani, back in 2013.

Emani weighed just 14 kilograms when she died. Moss and the girl's father, Eman Moss, stuffed the girl's body into a rubbish bin and set it alight in front of their two other children.

The prosecution showed text messages which showed Moss preparing meals for her husband and two other children while Emani was starving

She was confined to her bedroom without food or water and covered in her own waste, the court heard.

Eman Moss is currently serving life in prison after reaching a plea deal under which he received a life sentence in exchange for testifying against his wife.

Moss represented herself but gave no opening or closing remarks and called no witnesses, saying she believed God would see her through.

Gwinnett District Attorney Danny Porter branded Moss as an "evil stepmother", saying the case was like "a Cinderella story gone horribly wrong".

Moss is the first person to receive the death sentence in Georgia in five years.

She is the state's only female death row inmate and will only be the third to be executed there in the state's history.
