Elliot and Walt join forces to fight for a Pottsville school

MP JUSTINE Elliot and NSW State duty member for Tweed Walt Secord have joined forces to fight for a high school at Pottsville.

They are calling on NSW Education Minister Adrian Piccoli to name a timetable for construction to start on the school, a timely request considering the minister will address the Tweed Chamber of Commerce today.

Mrs Elliot said that for the last two years the Pottsville community had been seeking a meeting with Mr Piccoli to discuss a school to cater for the growing community.

"Now that the O'Farrell Government has finally agreed to talk to the Pottsville community; it is now the duty of the local Tweed MP and the Minister to spell out a timetable for the construction of a high school," a statement from Mrs Elliot and Mr Secord said.

A spokesman for the Minister of Health said Mr Piccoli would be meeting with the executive of the Pottsville Public School P&C later today.

"The Minister will be meeting with the executive of the Pottsville Public School P&C tomorrow to discuss calls for a new high school in Pottsville and to hear their concerns first hand," he said.

However, he said that the Department of Education and Communities did not believe there was sufficient demand for a high school in the area.

"The department's analysis shows there is not sufficient demographic demand for another government secondary school in the Tweed Local Government Area, which includes Pottsville," he said.

Mrs Elliot and Mr Secord said they had been raising the matter of Pottsville High School with the NSW Government for several years and they had also met a delegation of parents in Pottsville.

They added that students from the Tweed Coast were travelling long distances to go to school at Kingscliff and population forecasts would likely mean the problem would worsen.
