Elders Day honours pillars of wisdom

ABORIGINAL elders from across Northern NSW have been recognised in a celebration of age and wisdom.

In an event paying tribute to the leaders of local Aboriginal communities, Abcare Coffs Harbour yesterday staged its second annual Elders Day.

Abcare Coffs Harbour program assistant Mel Buckett said the event was a huge success.

"This is a great event recognising the contribution that Aboriginal elders make in our communities," she said.

Elders from the Coffs Coast, Macleay and Clarence valleys and New England took part in the day-long celebration at the Coffs Harbour Botanic Garden.

Special tribute was paid to the Gumbaynggirr, Ngemba, Dunghutti, Kamilaroi, Bungalung and Ngarabal tribes.

"It was such a success," Ms Buckett said.

"We had the Kelly Band performing from Armidale and some Aboriginal dancers from Grafton.

"It really was a special day and we hope to keep it an annual event."
