Elderly man in fatal train crash was trying to retrieve hat

POLICE reviewing footage from the scene of a fatal train accident in the NSW Blue Mountains believe an elderly man was trying to retrieve his hat off the tracks before he was hit.

Strong winds were tearing through Sydney's west on Thursday night when a man in his 60s left the platform at the Valley Heights station.

He was hit by an oncoming train soon after.

Blue Mountains police were still attempting to notify the man's family on Friday.
