Man dies after falling from balcony at Byron Bay apartment

UPDATE 2.30pm: POLICE say there appear to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of a man who fell from the balcony of a Byron Bay apartment on Thursday.

Emergency services were called to the Lighthouse Road apartment about 4pm Thursday, responding to reports a 69-year-old man had fallen from a  balcony.

Police said the man was treated for "serious injuries" at the scene by paramedics before being taken to the nearby Byron District Hospital, where he passed away.

Investigations into the incident were continuing, but police said there appeared to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding the man's fall.

Police have yet to release the man's name or confirm where is is from.

INITIAL REPORT: A MAN police believe to be aged in his 60s has died in hospital after he fell from a balcony at Byron Bay this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to an apartment block on Lighthouse Road about 4pm and discovered the man had fallen, according to a NSW Police spokesman.

When paramedics arrived they found the man had fallen from the second storey balcony of the apartments.

Paramedics treated the man for life threatening injuries and he was taken to Byron Bay Hospital in critical condition, but died a short time later.

The man had not yet been formally identified.

Police established a crime scene and investigations were continuing.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

The Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter was initially tasked to the scene but was called off.
