CHART topper Ed Sheeran will be in Australia early next month for fan-only radio events.

Sheeran will start in Melbourne with an invite-only performance for the Hit radio network.

The show will take place on Sunday February 5. Rather than at the usual rooftop in South Melbourne, the secret location is tipped to be a larger space, potentially outdoors.

Sheeran will also play at the Sydney Opera House for Nova on February 7, which the network will broadcast at 9pm that night as part of their popular Red Room series.

Eagle-eyed fans have noted that the presence of a logo for Sheeran's local promoter Frontier Touring on the radio events means the singer may use his promotional visit to announce a full Australian tour later this year.

The February visit comes ahead of the March 3 release of his third album ÷ (Divide).

Fans will have to listen to the radio stations for the chance to win tickets to the two events.

Sheeran set a new ARIA record this week as the first act to enter the singles chart at No. 1 and No. 2 with new songs.

Shape of You sold a remarkable 47,453 copies in a week to debut at No. 1, just ahead of Castle on the Hill at No. 2 on 41,116 copies.

The closest competition, Clean Bandit's Rockabye sold 15,933 by comparison at No.3.

The singles chart is compiled by a mix of downloads and streams.

Shape of You sold 35,308 downloads and Castle on the Hill 30,764.

Sheeran's two new songs were streamed nearly three million times in Australia last week.

Shape of You had 1,547 million streams, Castle on the Hill 1,331 million.

The demand mean Sheeran's ÷ is set to be one of the year's biggest sellers - the UK musician has sold nearly one million combined copies of his two albums so far in Australia.

In the UK Sheeran also became the first act to reach No. 1 and No. 2 simultaneously with new songs.

n his home territory Shape of You sold 227,000 copies to Castle on the Hill's 194,000.

The songs were streamed 13.4 million and 11.07 million in the UK last week, breaking Drake's previous one-week streaming record of 8.9 million for One Dance last year.

Shape of You is on track to sell 225,000 units in the US, which would translate to a No. 1 on the American chart when it is released tomorrow.

It would be Sheeran's first US No. 1, although he co-wrote Justin Bieber's chart topper Love Yourself.

If Castle on the Hill also debuts in the US Top 10 it would be the first time an artist has two new songs enter the American Top 10 in the same week.
