Drug precursor seized, two men arrested at cargo terminal

TWO men were arrested after authorities seized what could be up to 75kg of methamphetamine precursor, pseudoephedrine, at Sydney sea cargo terminals on Monday.

The men, including a Sydney freight forwarder, were arrested after the joint Operation Polaris seized boxes containing 75 canisters, each filled with about 1kg of white powder.

Authorities will allege the boxes were removed from a freight load at Alexandria before inspection by Customs officers.

Preliminary testing of one of the canisters indicated it contained pseudoephedrine with a street value of up $7.5 million.

Officers with Operation Polaris then executed a search warrant on a Waterloo unit, seizing more than $200,000 in cash, while a second search at a Bronte address led to the seizure of $40,000 and a small amount of cocaine and ecstasy.

The two men, one a 41-year-old freight forwarder, and the other, a 36-year-old, were charged with importing a commercial quantity of a border controlled drug.

Both were refused bail to appear at Central Local Court on Tuesday.

Authorities reported investigations were continuing.
