Drones fly on cutting edge of $10m farm grants

DRONES used to survey agricultural land in the Fassifern Valley are among the latest beneficiary projects of more than $10 million in Community Landcare Grants.

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Senator Joe Ludwig made the funding announcement with Labor candidate for Wright Sharon Murakami at Kalbar vegetable processing company, Kalfresh on Thursday.

He said the program provided support for 242 community action, agricultural innovation and community capacity building projects across the country.

"This funding will help local community organisations take on-ground action as well as build capacity and skills to manage our land," Mr Ludwig said.

"These grants strengthen the foundation of agriculture by working with landholders to make a real difference to keep Australia's productive land healthy, resilient and sustainable."

Among the 39 Queensland recipients to share $1,663,470 in grants is the Australian Controlled Traffic Farming Association.

The organisation has received $50,000 to deploy unmanned aerial vehicles to capture high resolution images over cane, horticulture and grain farms in the Fassifern Valley.

Ms Murakami said the 18-month "eye in the sky" project would enhance state-of-the-art farm production methods such as farm layout and retention.

She said ACTFA hoped to make the technology available to Australian growers in three to five years.

The Community Landcare grants are part of the Federal Government's Sustainable Agriculture stream of Caring for our Country.
