A driver is dead and pedestrian critical after crashes

A WOMAN was killed and a man critically injured in two separate car crash incidents on the Gold Coast on Wednesday afternoon.

A 61-year-old woman from Mermaid Waters was killed after her car struck a "boom gate structure" at Broadbeach Waters about 2pm

Police believe the woman was leaving a shopping centre on Hooker Blvd when she lost control of the vehicle.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Four hours later at 6.15pm, an 84-year-old was left in a critical condition after being hit by a car at Burleigh Heads.

Police believe the man walked in front of a car as it left a car park. He then fell on to the Gold Coast Highway and struck his head.

Police say he was treated at the scene before he was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

Both incidents are being investigated by the Queensland Forensic Crash Unit.
