RACE day is a big day on any Northern Rivers fashonista's calendar.

And, this year was no exception.

Race-goers impressed with their attire at the XXXX Gold Lismore Cup yesterday with the fillies off the track clearly taking advantage of the opportunity to get dolled-up.

Flowing floral dresses and bright, pastel colours stole the day, screaming spring racing carnival.

The ladies heels were high and luckily the track was in perfect condition, leaving very few stilettos stuck in the grass.

Clunes-based millner Julie Casey, who was sporting her own hand-made fascinator made from coral feathers, said she had been very busy up until race day preparing hats and fascinators for women attending the Cup.

"A hat or a fascinator completes an outfit and I've seen a lot of beautiful hats around today," Ms Casey said.

The men about the track were also smartly dressed with suspenders and fedora hats making a big appearance that made it feel like Lismore had stepped back into the 1940s.

According to the owner of Sobi Boutique Kim Winter, who was wearing a 1940's inspired jumpsuit, dresses that were "too tight and too short" were the ultimate race day faux pas.

"If the hemlines are a bit short they don't look as classy," Ms Winter said, adding most women she had seen looked great.

However, Ms Winter wasn't alone in these sentiments; the overarching advice from fashionistas on the field was that tight garments weren't ideal, even on a hot day like yesterday.

Like many women who were dressed up for the Lismore Cup, the winner of best dressed female at last year's Fashions on the Field, Rachel Everleigh, came along to the races to vie for the title of best dressed.

However, it was Angela McCormick of Alstonville who went home being crowned best-dressed female and Steven Dimech who came all the way from Tweed Heads who took out the prize for best-dressed male in the Fashions on the Field competition.

Ms Winter and her partner Jason Powell were awarded best dressed couple.
