SOME high-tech gear will be used to trace a buried wall at Lennox Head.

Ballina Shire Council has engaged a contractor to map the extent of a buried rock wall below the sand dunes north of Byron St at Lennox Head.

The council says it has limited information on the wall, built during the 1970s in response to significant erosion along Seven Mile Beach.

The wall is likely to extend over 1250 metres between Byron St and the Lake Ainsworth Sport and Recreation Centre.

There was a tea-tree fence built along Seven Mile Beach in a community effort led by Bill Tresise in the late 1960s in a bid to fight erosion, and rocks were placed behind sections of that fence.

The fence is buried under the sand today.

The council's study of the rock wall will be used to make an assessment about the level of protection the rock wall may offer against coastal erosion.

Ground-penetrating radar will be used to survey the wall at regular cross sections.

To maximise the accuracy and reliability of the GPR survey it will be necessary to:

Mow a one metre-wide grass strip at each of the proposed 52 cross sections, and

Remove a strip of vegetation between four and six metres wide at several cross sections, and expose the wall using a backhoe or excavator.

The disturbed area will be restored following assessment of the wall.
