AS ONE of the stars of the X-Men film franchise, Halle Berry is no stranger to the sci-fi genre.

So it comes as no surprise that Berry has chosen a sci-fi-framed TV series for her return to the small screen.

Extant is Berry's first TV series in 23 years and in it she plays astronaut Molly Watts, who returns from a 13-month solo space mission to discover she's inexplicably pregnant.

Goran Visnjic, who plays Berry's on-screen husband John, told APN: "It is a family drama, but it's a family drama with a lot of elements of science fiction.

"I don't want to label it sci-fi because you think of shows like Star Trek and Stargate, and this is not that. I'll just call it Extant for now."

Steven Spielberg was an executive producer on the pilot of the new US drama, which is created by up-and-coming writer and producer Mickey Fisher.

Visnjic, best known for his long-running role on medical drama ER, says Extant is a fast-paced series.

"We only have 13 episodes in which we're trying to tell a whole story," he said.

"You see (in episode one) that Halle's character is pregnant very quickly and then John finds out immediately in episode two," he said.

"Then we find out we've been lied to and it's not how we imagined things. There's going to be a delivery of the baby; everything is happening very quickly.

"When I talked to the producers and the writers they promised we're going to be giving the audience a lot of answers. We're not going to have a great premise and then keep milking it."

The first episode sees Molly, recently returned from space, trying to settle back into family life.

But her family is anything but ordinary.

Her husband John is a leader in the field of robotics and has created an artificially intelligent prototype he and Molly have been raising as their son, Ethan.

"John is not aware that he's opening Pandora's Box here, but by the end of the season he will be," Visnjic said.

In this Sunday's episode, after Molly collapses and experiences a vision Sam agrees to give her an ultrasound so she can learn more about her mysterious pregnancy.

Extant airs Sundays at 8.45pm on Channel 10.
